Is Your Website Actually Bringing You Leads?

Lots of Reno and Sparks trades have a website. Few know if it brings in work. Here's how to check, the signs it isn't working, and simple fixes that help.

Most small trades businesses in Reno and Sparks have a website. Far fewer can answer a simple question: is it actually bringing in work? Some owners assume it is because it looks nice. Others assume it isn't because the phone feels quiet. Either way, it's a guess. This post shows how to stop guessing, the signs a site isn't pulling its weight, and the simple fixes that usually help.

Why "I think it's working" isn't good enough

Your website is supposed to be a salesperson that works around the clock. If you hired a real salesperson, you would want to know how many leads they brought in. Your site deserves the same question. Without real numbers, you can't tell if it's time to fix it, leave it alone, or spend more on it.

How to tell if your website produces leads

You don't need fancy software to start. These five checks cover most of it.

1. Tagged form emails

Every quote form on your site should send you an email that says it came from the website, and ideally which page. A subject line like "LEAD | Your Business | Sparks page" makes it easy to search your inbox at the end of the month and count. If your form emails all look the same as every other email, or go to an inbox nobody checks, you're flying blind.

2. Call clicks

For trades, most leads still call. On a phone, a tap on your number is a strong sign someone is about to call you. A properly set up phone link (a tel: link) lets you count those taps with analytics, and a tracking number for the website can show which calls came from it.

3. Google Search Console impressions and clicks

Google Search Console is free. It shows which searches your site appears for, how many times it showed up (impressions), and how many people clicked. If impressions are near zero, Google isn't showing your site. If impressions are healthy but clicks are low, your titles and descriptions aren't convincing people to click.

4. Google Business Profile calls

Your Google Business Profile has its own performance report with calls, website clicks and direction requests. It's a separate source of leads from your website, but the two work together. Website clicks from your profile tell you people want to see more before they call.

5. Ask "How did you hear about us?"

The oldest method still works. Ask every new caller and write the answer down. "Google" or "your website" counts. Even a simple tally on a notepad for a month tells you a lot.

Signs your website isn't working

  • You can't remember the last website lead. If nobody says they found you online, believe them.
  • Form emails never arrive. Broken forms are more common than you'd think. Send yourself a test every month.
  • Search Console shows few impressions. Google isn't showing your pages for the searches that matter.
  • It's hard to use on a phone. Tiny text, slow loading, or a number you can't tap.
  • It never says where you work. If the site doesn't mention Reno, Sparks or the towns you serve, Google and customers have to guess.
  • No reviews anywhere on it. People want proof before they call a stranger.

Simple fixes that usually help

Phone number above the fold

Your number should be visible the second the page loads, without scrolling, and tappable on a phone. Someone with a leaking water heater isn't going to hunt for it.

A quote form on every page

People land on all kinds of pages, not just your home page. Put a short quote form, or a clear button to one, on every page. Ask only what you need to quote.

City and service pages

One page that lists every service rarely ranks for any of them. Give each main service its own page, and add pages for the towns you actually serve. That's how you show up for searches like "water heater repair Sparks." Our local SEO work is built around this.

Fast on mobile

Most local searches happen on phones. A site that loads slowly or breaks on a small screen loses people before they read a word. Compress images, cut the clutter, and test it on your own phone.

Reviews on the site

Show real reviews from real customers on your pages, and keep new ones coming. See how we help with getting more Google reviews.

Don't lose the leads you do get

A website that brings in leads only pays if you answer them. If calls ring out while you're on a job, a missed-call text back keeps the conversation alive. And if quote follow-up is eating your evenings, read Stop Trading Your Day for Quotes.

How Reno Map Pros sets up lead tracking

When we build or fix a site, tracking is part of the job, not an afterthought:

  1. Tagged forms. Every form email says it's a lead, which site it came from, and which page.
  2. Tappable phone number at the top of every page, set up so taps can be counted.
  3. Search Console set up and verified, with your sitemap submitted and new pages sent to Google for indexing.
  4. Google Business Profile linked to your site and checked so calls and clicks show up in its report.
  5. A plain-English check-in on what's coming in, so you know if the site is earning its keep.

If you want leads to flow into one place with automatic follow-up, we can connect your forms to GoHighLevel. Read GoHighLevel expert in Reno: workflows and funnels for how that works, or see our website design service.

Questions we hear

How do I know if my website is bringing in leads?

Count the leads that came from it. Tag your website form emails so you can see which page sent them, track clicks on your phone number, check Google Search Console for impressions and clicks, check calls in your Google Business Profile, and ask every new customer how they heard about you.

What is Google Search Console?

It is a free tool from Google that shows which searches your site appears for, how often it shows up (impressions), and how often people click. It also tells you which pages Google has indexed.

My site gets visits but no calls. What is wrong?

Usually the site makes it hard to act. Common causes are a phone number buried at the bottom, no quote form on the page people land on, a slow or broken mobile layout, or pages that never say which towns you serve.

Do I need a new website to fix this?

Not always. Many sites can be fixed by moving the phone number up, adding a quote form to every page, adding service and city pages, speeding up mobile, and showing reviews. If the site can't be fixed cleanly, a rebuild can make more sense. We will tell you which.

Can you set up lead tracking on a site you didn't build?

Often, yes. It depends on how the site is built and what access you have. A free audit is the easiest way to find out.
